State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has announced creation of a new Senate Select Committee on Mining Jobs. “The committee will review Wisconsin’s mining laws and regulations, and make improvements aimed at creating jobs in rural Wisconsin,” said a release from his office.
Fitzgerald has named Senator Neal Kedzie (R-Elkhorn) as the committee chair, along with Senators Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center), Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay) and Rich Zipperer (R-Pewaukee). It’s expected that three Democrats will also be named to serve on the panel.
Fitzgerald’s action came a day after Bad River Tribal Chairman Michael Wiggins, Jr. reiterated his band’s opposition to the proposed Penokee Range open-pit iron ore mine.
