A Houston radio station has dropped its all news format and canned the 47 workers dedicated to producing it. The transition manifested itself abruptly on the air Tuesday morning, when listeners heard back-to-back Beyonce.
Yashima Azilove with Radio One told Eyewitness News the decision wasn’t made quickly. She blamed poor ratings and dwindling revenues for the switch.
“She’s Queen Bee. In looking to make a transition, we go back to what we know,” said Azilove. “We know urban radio. We’re in Houston, the combination seemed like a winning one.”
I really can’t add much more to this, expect to note that the shuttered newsroom was apparently the only commercial news station in that particular market.
